Intense blizzard impacts Saskatchewan

Weather summary for Saskatchewan issued by Environment Canada at 2:03 p.m. CST Thursday 14 January 2021. Discussion. An intense Alberta clipper, which moved across southern Saskatchewan, brought extreme weather conditions to the region on Wednesday afternoon and overnight. Rain and freezing rain ahead of the system quickly changed to snow and blowing snow as a cold front behind the system advanced eastward. With the passage of the cold front widespread winds in excess of 100 km/h were reported, leading to power outages and reports of structural and tree damage across the province. When combined with falling snow, these winds produced whiteout conditions resulting in a number of highway closures. Blizzard conditions persist early this morning over southeastern Saskatchewan but are expected to slowly improve throughout the day. The following observations are the peak wind gusts reported by ECCC weather stations yesterday, January 13 and overnight to 4:00 CST am January 14. Units are kilometres per hour.
