Blizzard warnings in effect for Northern Plains


WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO 6 AM CST THURSDAY...BLIZZARD WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM TO 9 PM CST THURSDAY... * WHAT...Heavy snow and blizzard conditions expected. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches expected. Snow will develop this evening, with blizzard conditions developing Thursday morning. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph on Thursday. * WHERE...West Otter Tail and Grant Counties. * WHEN...For the Winter Storm Warning, from 6 PM this evening to 6 AM CST Thursday. For the Blizzard Warning, from 6 AM to 9 PM CST Thursday. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Travel will be very difficult. Widespread blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions will impact the morning and evening commute. Dangerously cold wind chills as low as 35 below zero will cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.

Snowfall will continue Wednesday through Thursday, with intermittent bands of heavy snow. Gusty winds starting Wednesday night will lead to significant reductions in visibility due to blowing snow. Falling and blowing snow will lead to blizzard conditions in the southern Red River Valley, with other areas in the Red River Valley still seeing significantly reduced visibility from Thursday morning into evening. Prepare for hazardous to impossible travel conditions along with impacts to the Wednesday evening and both Thursday morning and evening commutes. Conditions won’t improve until Thursday night, only to have dangerous wind chills less than -40 degrees Thursday overnight into Friday morning.
